Illustrations | Volunteer Project

I contributed as a volunteer to a project at BCIT where I served as a member of a team of illustrators under the guidance of a seasoned creative director. Our primary objective was to create illustrations depicting leaves, buds, and branches. In addition to this core responsibility, I was tasked with developing an icon system to be implemented on maps, facilitating the clear identification of various plant categories.Despite the remote work arrangements, our team remained highly collaborative, leveraging virtual platforms such as Zoom for our meetings with both team members and stakeholders. I used Adobe Illustrator to create all designs for this project.

Icon Iterations

The development of the icon system for the maps followed a structured process. Beginning with two initial options for trees and shrubs, the customer selected option 2 for trees and option 1 for shrubs. Subsequently, option 2 underwent further refinement through several iterations, leading to the final selection of icons. This iterative process was done to ensure alignment with the customer’s preferences and project objectives.

The image above presents the icon system I crafted, seamlessly integrated into the illustrated map. Each icon finds its place on the map according to its respective category, enhancing the map’s user-friendliness and visual appeal.

Final Illustrations

The illustrations of the leaves and branches were done with the help of images provided by the customer, although clarity was occasionally lacking. In such cases, we gathered additional images, often consulting 4-5 sources to ensure an accurate depiction of details. Iterative refinement was integral to meeting the precise specifications and preferences of the customer throughout the process.
